Voice Confidence
December 2024.
"I want to understand and get to know my sound; and work out who I am away from the roles".
I have had interesting discussions in the studio recently regarding voice confidence. I work with actors, singers, theatre and voice artists. I also work with the minimally verbal, stammering and autism populations, and people living with a wide range of disabilities. The common thread running through my work is voice psychology, voice relation, and our sense of self.
The above quote came from a client. We've worked together for a few months since he began his latest theatre role, and our focus has been defining the sound of his character; his movements, rhythm, colours and breath. Our work has moved between speech, somatic voice work, breath, vocalisations, and occasionally...much to his surprise..singing. Now that we've said goodbye to that character and he's briefly in between roles, he wants to unpick his sound. He's been moving from role to role and shared that he's not sure who he is away from his characters.
My client is convinced other actors probably have a similar experience and encouraged me to share his. The truth is, I think this desire to find out who we are through our sound is shared by all who explore voice work. I have had many students and clients share this desire over the years, some who are children (and very insightful!), others who struggle with speech, memory, communication, and of course, those who wish to study singing.
Can you relate to this? What is the current focus of your voice work? Do you wish to learn more about the relationship between self and voice? Are you curious about voice confidence and developing your sound? To continue the conversation or to enquire about working together, please feel free to get in touch. I would love to hear from you.
